Successful third centre conference

The third SESBC conference took place in Uppsala at Botaniska hotellet, 15–16 October. The event was well attended with an increased number of participants since previous conferences. The group discussions had a focus on preparation for the next phase of the centre. The conference also included network activities and a poster session.
Urban Lundin from Uppsala University hosted the event and started the first day with a brief history lesson about the historic city of Uppsala, and their many famous scientists like Anders Celcius, and Carl von Linné being the most cited in the world. Director Massimo Bongiorno and Co-director Anna Martinelli then gave a status overview of the centre activities and the ongoing preparations of phase two.

Professor emeritus Göran Andersson, ETH, held a keynote speech called “Research Needs and Challenges of the Future Electric Power System - some personal reflections”. Göran gave a short history recap on the energy trilemma and reminded that the power system is based on non-applied science and then improved by engineering. On the question on how to get more research results applied today it’s important to work on “real” problems with joint projects between research institutions and the power industry.

Keynote speaker of the second day was Dr. Julia Matevosyan from Energy Systems Integration Group, USA. Julia gave the audience an insightful speech on the “Impacts of high shares of wind, solar and storage on power systems”, with examples from Texas and other places.

There was a lot of engagement from the audience and all speakers received a lot of questions.
